North Motorway Axis Of Crete (Boak) – Section Chania – Heraklion

NORTH MOTORWAY AXIS OF CRETE (BOAK) – Section Chania – Heraklion

OMEK is to participate in the Independent Engineer Scheme of the Concession Agreement Project.

Project Budget ~ 1.8 billion Euros. – Duration 60 months.

The Project concerns the Road Axis from Chania to Heraklion, which consists of four (4) Road Sections and refers to the new alignment of the BOAK with motorway characteristics, a four-lane cross-section with a road width of 21.50m without the lateral configurations:

  1. a) Two Traffic Lanes per Direction with a total width of 7.00m (2 x 3.50m).
  2. b) Emergency Lanes which, including the outer traffic boundary line, have a width of 2.50m (2.25m + 0.25m).
  3. c) Central island with a total width of 2.50m including the internal guide lanes with a double-sided New Jersey type parapet in the middle. At the bridge locations the width of the roadway remains the same. In the case of tunnels, the total width of the roadway is 10.00m per section including the sidewalks.

The Project Technical Features per Section are as follows:

Souda – Vryses section (2N) with a length of approximately 25.7km from the end of the constructed and operational Chania Bypass section (Ch. 8+000), while its end is located at Ch. 33+718 and includes:

– Six (6) Interchange Junctions,

– Four (4) Tunnels with a total length of 4.0km,

– Two (2) Cut & Covers with a total length of 0.9km,

– Ten (10) Bridges of 1.64km length,

– One (1) Side Road Bridge of 0.043km length,

– Two (2) Overpasses,

– Seventeen (17) Underpasses,

– Seven (7) Side Road Underpasses,

– Length of the Side Road Network 19km,

– One (1) (temporary) Frontline Toll Station,

– All the infrastructure planned for the operation of the Toll Collection System (TCS). The layout of the new Road Axis in a significant total length of its sections coincides with or moves parallel and close to the layout of the existing BOAK, while in the remaining Section it is located outside the existing BOAK. Specifically, the Preliminary Road Design indicates that 58% of the length of the new Road Section will be constructed by integrating the existing BOAK, while 42% is located outside and independently of it.

Section Vryses – Atsipopoulo (3N) with a length of approximately 21.8km from Ch. 34+218 (beyond the Souda – Vryses section) to the beginning of the existing section of the Rethymno Bypass at Ch. 56+090 and includes:

– Two (2) Interchange Junctions,

– Four (4) Tunnels with a total length of 9.7km,

– Two (2) Cut & Covers with a total length of 0.5km,

– Nine (9) Bridges of 2.0km length,

– Two (2) Side Road Bridges of 0.058km length,

– One (1) Overpass,

– Ten (10) Underpasses,

– Eight (8) Side Road Underpasses,

– Length of the Side Road Network 13.9km,

– One (1) (temporary) Frontline Toll Station,

– All infrastructure for the operation of the Toll Collection System (TCS),

– A two-sided Motorist Service Station (MSS) with a Maintenance Operations Center (MOC) at around the 41+000 km.

The alignment along the longest length of the Road Section is located outside and south of the existing BOAK, while only the beginning and end of the Section coincide with its alignment.

Section Amari – Skaleta (5N) with a length of approximately 12.4km from the end of the existing section of the BOAK (Rethymno Bypass) (Ch. 61+849) to Ch. 74+185 (before Latzimas Airport) and includes:

– One (1) Interchange Junctions,

– Six (6) Tunnels with a total length of 4.0km,

– One (1) Cut & Cover of total length 0.2km,

– Nine (9) Bridges of 0.7km length,

– Two (2) Side Road Bridges of 0.07km length,

– Two (2) Overpasses,

– Eight (8) Underpasses,

– Five (5) Side Road Underpasses,

– Length of the Side Road Network 10.2km,

– All infrastructure for the operation of the Toll Collection System (TCS).

The beginning of the Section is at the end of the constructed Rethymno Bypass Section. The proposed alignment is a new alignment and the new Road Section is moved away from the course of the existing BOAK towards the south.

Skaleta – Linoperamata Section (6N & 7N) with a length of approximately 46.7km from Ch. 74+710 (beyond the Amari – Skaleta section) to Ch. 121+420 at the beginning of the existing Linoperamata I/C, which also constitutes the beginning of the existing Road Axis (with Motorway intersection) Heraklion Bypass and includes:

– Eight (8) Interchanges Junctions,

– Seven (7) Tunnels with a total length of 6.9km,

– Thirteen (13) Cut & Covers with a total length of 3.2km,

– Twenty-seven (27) Bridges of 5.5km length,

– Three (3) Bridges on Branches I/C of 0.4km length,

– Two (2) Side Road Bridges of 0.04km length,

– Nineteen (19) Underpasses,

– Twelve (12) Side Road Underpasses,

– Length of the Side Road Network 21km,

– One (1) (temporary) Frontline Toll Station,

– All infrastructure for the operation of the Toll Collection System (TCS),

– One (1) Motorist Service Station (MSS) proposed for investigation with a Maintenance Operation Center (MOC) around Ch. 108+350 in the direction from Rethymno to Heraklion, as well as one (1) proposed for investigation with a MCO around Ch. 111+600 in the direction from Heraklion to Rethymno.

The alignment of the new Road Axis over a significant total length of its sections coincides with or runs parallel and close to the alignment of the existing BOAK, while in the remaining section it is located outside the existing BOAK with the aim of limiting expropriations and reducing the environmental impacts from the construction of the Project.

Specifically, the Preliminary Road Construction Design indicates that 41% of the length of the new Road Section will be constructed by integrating the existing BOAK, while 59% will be located outside and independently of it.
