OMEK S.A. is strategically focused on its involvement in pumped-storage hydroelectric projects, aligning with the national objectives for green transition and energy independence. This direction is fully consistent with the broader energy policy framework of Greece and the European Union.
To date, over 50 projects in the pumped-storage sector, with a total installed capacity exceeding 12 GW, have received licensing approval from the Regulatory Authority for Energy, Waste and Water (RAAEY). Furthermore, according to the revised National Plan for Energy and Climate (Government Gazette 6983/19.12.2024), Greece has set an ambitious target of developing approximately 5.5 GW of pumped-storage capacity by 2050. This reflects the country’s commitment to maximizing the integration and efficiency of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), supporting energy autonomy and accelerating the shift toward sustainable, low-carbon energy systems.
In this context, OMEK S.A. has already taken a leading role, participating in the development of the first large-scale pumped-storage hydroelectric project in Amfilochia, currently under construction by TERNA ENERGY – a Masdar company. The successful engagement in this pioneering project establishes OMEK S.A. as a front-runner among Greek engineering firms in the sector.
Guided by the strategy of the Project Owner to expand into a series of similar developments, OMEK S.A. considers itself in a position of strategic priority, owing to its existing expertise, established presence, and proven capability in this highly specialized and nationally significant field.
OMEK S.A., as a leader of Companies and Institutions is developing a scientifically validated methodology for monitoring, detecting, and predicting geo-environmental risks in linear infrastructure projects, which may occur unpredictably or under the influence of climate change phenomena, using new technologies and multimodal data (satellite data, UAV systems, etc.) and integrating artificial intelligence (AI) models.
