AMFILOCHIA HYDRO PUMP STATION INDEPENDENT ENGINEER ONGOING

The Pumped-Storage Hydro Project in Amfilochia, is characterized as a Project of Common Interest under the code name PCI 2.9 (former 3.24). It comprises of two individual pumped-storage hydro projects in the areas of ‘Agios Georgios’ and ‘Pyrgos’ in the Municipalities of Amfilochia and Agrinio, Aetolia-Acarnania Prefecture.

Key Project Components:

  • Upper Reservoirs – Dams

Agios Georgios Reservoir and homonymous hardfill Dam in the basin of the Kapnitsorema stream with a reservoir area of approx. 38 hectares and a usable storage capacity of 6,7×106 m3 at the maximum water level elevation of 388,00 m a.s.l. The hardfill Dam has a volume of 765.000 m3, a 500 m long crest at elevation 389,50 m a.s.l,   with an average and maximum height of 48 m and 60 m respectively, as well as the necessary auxiliary facilities such as spillway, diversion, bottom outlet and environmental flow structures.

Pyrgos Reservoir and homonymous hardfill Dam in the basin of the Somporema stream with a reservoir area of approx. 18,3 hectares and a usable storage capacity of 2,01×106 m3 at the maximum water level elevation of 430,00 m a.s.l. The hardfill Dam has a volume of 120.000 m3, a 166 m long crest at elevation 432,00 m a.s.l,   with an average and maximum height of 28 m and 52 m respectively, as well as the necessary auxiliary facilities such as spillway, diversion, bottom outlet and environmental flow structures.

  • Upper Reservoir intakes
      1. Agios Georgios: Includes a water intake structure and gate shaft for controlling flow into the waterway (headrace tunnel).
      2. Pyrgos: Includes a water intake structure and gate shaft for controlling flow into the waterway (headrace tunnel).
  • Waterways
      1. Agios Georgios: Includes the concrete-lined headrace tunnel, with a diameter of 7,80 m and a length of approximately 2.061 m, the surge tank, the steel-lined penstock shaft and high-pressure tunnel, and the bifurcation systems to the reversible units (underground steel lining constructions).
      2. Pyrgos: Includes the concrete-lined headrace tunnel, with a diameter of 5 m and a length of approximately 871 m, the surge tank, the steel-lined penstock shaft and high-pressure tunnel, and the bifurcation system to the reversible units (underground steel lining constructions).
  • Unified Ag. Georgios & Pyrgos Power Station
      1. Agios Georgios: Equipped with four (4) units (vertical-axis Francis type pump-turbines), of a maximum pumping capacity of 496 MW and a maximum generating capacity of 460 MW, as well as the entirety of the necessary main and auxiliary electromechanical equipment.
      2. Pyrgos: Equipped with two (2) units (vertical-axis Francis type pump-turbines), of a maximum pumping capacity of 234 MW and a maximum generating capacity of 220 MW, as well as the entirety of the necessary main and auxiliary electromechanical equipment.
  • Tailrace Channels: Each unit is connected to a hydrodynamically designed tailrace channel, approx. 80 m in length, constructed as a narrow rectangular cross-section downstream of the turbine draft tube, which gradually widens toward the downstream outlet to the existing Kastraki reservoir.
  • Downstream Water Intakes: In pumping mode, water is drawn from the existing Kastraki reservoir through dedicated intake structures equipped with trash racks and controlled gate systems, to the respective upper reservoir. In generating mode, said structures operate as water outlets for the discharge flows to the Kastraki reservoir.
